An ode to the history of Black cowgirls. Popular culture taught us to picture the American West one way, but its history tells a different story: after the Civil War, an estimated one in four cowboys were Black. Black cowgirls, too, have always been part of this legacy, despite being largely written out of the stories and images that came to define the West. This project celebrates that overlooked history, reimagining it through fashion, portraiture, and contemporary style.
